- State your situation briefly and then focus on solutions: a request is more convincing when you offer concrete arrangements.
- Layout of a formal letter: place and date, a clear subject, 'Madame, Monsieur,' (or the person's title), then an introduction stating why you write, two or three argued paragraphs, and a polite closing formula such as 'Je vous prie d'agréer, Madame, Monsieur, l'expression de mes salutations distinguées.'
- Stay formal: vouvoiement, no contractions or slang, polite structures ('je me permets de', 'je vous serais reconnaissant(e) de').
- DELF B2 assessment: follow the instructions (250 words minimum), argue clearly with examples, link ideas with varied connectors, use a rich and precise vocabulary, and check agreements, verb tenses and spelling.

Subject: Request for timetable adjustments for a working student Dear Registrar, As a second-year management undergraduate, I am writing to request an adjustment of my university timetable. I work twenty hours a week in a supermarket to pay for my studies and housing. My job is not a comfort choice but a necessity. My parents cannot help me financially, and the grant I receive covers only part of my rent. Yet several lectures take place at the same time as my work, and compulsory attendance with no possibility of catching up exposes me to the risk of failing. Nevertheless, I am not asking for any privilege. I would simply like to be able to follow some classes remotely or access lecture recordings and, as an exception, benefit from a make-up session for missed tutorials. I will of course provide a document from my employer and my work contract. I am convinced that this kind of scheme would benefit many students in my situation, since it would allow them to continue studying without giving up their job. For my part, I promise to remain very committed: my first-semester results, above average, bear witness to this. I am also ready to meet you at your convenience to examine with you the most realistic solutions for the administration. Awaiting your reply, I thank you for the attention you will give to my request and remain, Finally, I would like to stress that many of my classmates hesitate to ask for help for fear of being judged, whereas a clear and official arrangement would spare them from exhausting themselves between two schedules. Such a measure would also be in keeping with the spirit of equal opportunities that our institution defends. Yours sincerely,
