I am in favour of compulsory vaccination of children for serious diseases, because it protects the whole of society. First, some contagious diseases, such as measles, can cause serious or even fatal complications. Vaccines have made it possible to almost eliminate them in many countries. But when too few children are vaccinated, these diseases come back. The obligation therefore guarantees a sufficient level of protection for the whole population. Next, it is also a matter of protecting the most vulnerable: babies too young to be vaccinated, the sick and the elderly. Their safety depends on the behaviour of others. In this case, collective responsibility seems to me more important than individual choice. Admittedly, some parents are afraid of side effects and wish to keep the freedom to decide for their child. This worry is understandable, especially with all the contradictory information circulating on the internet. Nevertheless, compulsory vaccines are tested and controlled by the health authorities, and serious effects are extremely rare. That is why the obligation should come with clear explanations, dialogue with doctors and exceptions for children who have a genuine medical reason. In short, making certain vaccines compulsory is a responsible public health measure, provided families are respected and given reliable information.
