I am in favour of compulsory internships, but only if they are well supervised and properly paid. First, an internship allows you to discover the professional world. Theoretical courses are useful, but they do not replace practice: working in a team, meeting deadlines, speaking to customers. This experience helps students confirm their career choice, build a network of contacts and make their CV more attractive for their first job. Next, when the internship is well organised, it also benefits the company. It welcomes motivated people with new ideas, and can spot future colleagues. Many young people moreover get their first job in the company where they did their internship. However, some internships pose real problems. Some employers use interns as cheap labour to replace employees, without teaching them much. When the internship is unpaid or very poorly paid, it also becomes difficult for students from modest backgrounds, who have to pay for housing and food. This creates inequality between those whose parents can help them and the others. That is why the law should set a maximum duration, a minimum pay, a supervisor in the company and follow-up by the institution. In short, the internship is an excellent training tool, provided it does not turn into exploitation.
