Last month, my family celebrated a traditional holiday from my country of origin in our apartment. About thirty people had come. The women wore beautiful colourful clothes, we prepared dishes that my grandmother used to cook and the children danced to music that many were hearing for the first time. I even invited two Quebec neighbours, who loved the evening. I think it is very important to keep your traditions when you live in another country. They remind us where we come from and give us a strong identity. They also allow us to pass on a language and values to children. This is not opposed to integration: on the contrary, sharing your culture with others enriches everyone. A society is more beautiful when it is diverse.
