  • Ask the key used-car questions: year, mileage, number of owners, accidents, service history, inspection.
  • Ask about test drive, mechanic check, warranty and papers (registration, sale certificate).
  • Ask why they sell, and whether the price is negotiable.
  • Reformulate numbers to avoid mistakes: 'Donc 85 000 kilomètres, c'est bien cela ?'

Hello, sir, I'm calling about the ad for the second-hand car you're selling. Is it still available? Very good, thank you. Well, I'm looking for a small reliable car to go to work every day. In what year was it first registered, and how many kilometres does it have on the clock? OK, so two thousand sixteen and eighty thousand kilometres, I'll note that. How many owners were there before you? Has it ever had an accident, even a minor one? Have the services been done regularly, and do you have all the invoices? Which garage did you use? When was the last roadworthiness test, and were there any faults to fix? Sorry, could you repeat the date, please? Ah yes, last March, thank you. What is its average fuel consumption, in town and on the motorway? Is it a petrol or a diesel car? When did you last change the tyres and the timing belt? Are there any scratches or dents on the bodywork? Does the air conditioning work well? Are there any special options, such as a GPS or a reversing camera? What is the price, and is it negotiable? I admit I'm hesitating a little, because I saw a similar model at a dealership, a bit newer but much more expensive, so yours seems more reasonable. Could I take it for a test drive, and bring a mechanic to check it? When would you be available, preferably on weekdays after six p.m. or Saturday morning? Why are you selling it, if it's not indiscreet to ask? Which documents will you give me at the sale: the registration certificate, the transfer certificate, the service book? Is there any lien or debt on the car? Can you give me a small warranty, for example one month? How do you prefer to be paid: by bank cheque or by transfer? Can you keep it for me until Saturday? Does it have any starting problems in cold weather? And how many keys do you have, including the spare? Could you also send me more photos and a summary by email? So, to sum up, the car has eighty thousand kilometres, it costs seven thousand euros and we meet on Saturday at ten o'clock for the test drive. Is that right? Perfect. Thank you very much for all this information and for your frankness. See you Saturday, have a good day.
