  • Don't pick an extreme. Still be clear.
  • Argument 1: sciences = health, technology, daily life (example: vaccines, electricity). Argument 2: arts = emotion, identity, creativity (example: music during hard times).
  • Show that they complement each other (architecture, design, cinema).

Merci.

Hello. I am asked whether the sciences are more important than the arts. I am not going to choose an extreme. My position is that both are essential, but I give a slight priority to the sciences. I will explain this with two arguments, also showing why the arts are indispensable. My first argument is that the sciences have concretely changed our lives, and they protect us. Think of medicine: thanks to vaccines, diseases that used to kill millions of people have almost disappeared. My grandmother often tells me that, in her village, many children died before the age of five. Today, that has become rare. Think also of electricity, drinking water, the Internet. Without science, we could not preserve food, treat wounds or communicate with a loved one who lives on the other side of the world, as I do every week with my family. And the great challenges of the future, like climate change, will need scientific solutions. That is why I think the sciences are a priority. My second argument is that the arts are just as necessary, because living is not only surviving. Music, painting and literature give us emotion, and they build our identity and our culture. I remember the lockdown: locked in at home, we all looked for films, books and music. My neighbor sang on her balcony every evening, and it gave courage to the whole building. No medicine has that effect. Moreover, the arts develop imagination, and imagination is also the source of scientific creativity. Einstein already said that imagination is more important than knowledge. Some will say that this position is too timid, and that it would be better to choose only one of the two. I understand this objection, but I disagree. Opposing the sciences and the arts is a mistake, because they are two complementary ways of understanding the world: one explains it, the other gives it meaning. Architecture is a good example: a building must be solid thanks to mathematics and physics, but it must also be beautiful, otherwise nobody wants to live in it. The same goes for the design of a phone, or for cinema, which uses very advanced technology in the service of a story. Without the sciences, we could not make films, and without the arts, we would have nothing to tell in them. So why a slight priority for the sciences? Quite simply because basic needs come first: getting treatment, eating, having shelter. When these needs are met, we can fully enjoy the arts. But I repeat that this priority is slight, and that a society without culture would be a sad society, even if it were healthy. In conclusion, the sciences and the arts complement each other, and one does not go without the other. If I had to lean to one side, I would choose the sciences for their vital impact, but I would always defend an education that gives the arts a real place. Thank you.
