Prepositions
Prepositions are small words, but they cause many mistakes in the TCF and TEF Canada, especially in grammar tasks and written expression.
Go to the 12 exercisesBasics: à, de, en, dans, chez and contractions
- À shows a place or direction (à Lyon) and de shows origin or possession (le livre du professeur).
- Dans means inside a closed space; en is used with languages, materials and means of transport; chez means at someone's home or business.
- Contractions are compulsory: à + le = au, à + les = aux, de + le = du, de + les = des.
- There is no contraction with la or l'.

- Par shows the agent in a passive sentence, a means, or a route: par la fenêtre.
- Sur means on top of or about; sous means under.
- Avec and sans express company or manner, and sans is not followed by an article in many cases: sans problème, sans argent.
